New Prom Photography Trend On The Horizon!

Its prom season! As teenage girls make hair appointments and go dress shopping, young guys are renting a tux and securing date plans. It’s an exciting time in high school!

But is it an exciting time for photographers? As we have written about in the past the prom business has changed drastically! Only 7 years ago 80% of couples at proms were getting their picture taken. But, since the age of digital this statistic has gone down, and fast. Now according to Jason Rich, at Art Rich Photography, only about 25% of couples have their picture taken by the on site photographer. Kids seem to have lost interest in the traditional prom package. They want some sort of keepsake to remember how much fun they had the night of their prom, says Jason. This is why their studio is offering “Prom Brochures”! It’s a different spin of the traditional prom photos. Yes, the couple’s photos are still included, but they are creatively accompanied by candid shots of everyone having a great time in a convenient 8.5x11 brochure!

When I interviewed Jason, who spearheaded the use of these brochures at Art Rich Photography, he told me a little about how they market them. “Has your prom committee ordered prom favors for this year?” Jason will ask. More often than not the answer is no. So he suggests these brochures in lieu of traditional prom favors. The committee includes them in the price of the prom ticket and everyone who attends gets a brochure! The night of the prom Jason’s team will photograph the couples as usual, but they take plenty of candid shots as well. An in house graphic designer takes all the images and designs the brochure creating a priceless memory of prom night.

Doing this brings security back to the photographer! Now when they shoot a prom they have an order for 200 or 300 brochures before they even click the shutter…not bad! Jason said the first year they marketed these brochures they got 3 schools to include it in the price of the prom ticket, the second year they had 10, and it continues grow!

The prom business has not died! It’s been reinvented!
