You are five years old again. It’s Saturday morning, and the kitchen smells like French toast and syrup; the best smell in the world. Your mom is in her robe cooking breakfast, your dad is sipping coffee reading the paper, and your older brother is sitting on the living room floor mesmerized by cartoons. You sit down next to him with your glass of orange juice and start watching The Jetson’s. You’re watching as George Jetson gets a phone call from his boss Mr. Spacely on the television. “That’s so cool!!!” says your older brother.
He runs over to the kitchen table and grabs your parents cell phones, bringing them back he says to you “hold this” and hands you your mom’s iPhone. He calls you from your dad’s iPhone, and you use the Face Time application to see each other while you talk. Your brother looks at your and says “Hey look! We’re the Jetson’s!”
Your probably chuckling at this scene picturing two young boys running around using Face Time to play instead of the walkie-talkies we used as kids (or can and string). But really, stop and think about it; that young boy isn’t far off. We are heading towards being the Jetson’s! We have robots vacuum like the Roomba that are just like Rosie; their robot used to do house work; our cars park themselves; we play games against a computer; our email is easily compared to their “super-fast mail”; we ARE the Jetson’s, or at least on our way there.
What has that meant for photographers? It means that you have to keep up with the Jetson’s too! The world is moving forward with technology at a rate that 40 years ago we thought was only imaginary. But these technologies have made publicizing businesses and ideas easier than ever! There are so many business assets at our disposal. But the question is; are you as a business owner using these opportunities to the full?
Things like Living Social and Groupon are highly effective. We get updated deals daily right on our phones! I have gotten many deals from photographers offering specials for sitting fees or products, and you can see how many people bought these deals. It’s no small number; people all over are so excited when they get a deal! Have you looked into this possibility for yourself? If you are already using this I’d love to hear how it’s working out. I can only speak from a consumer’s point of view, but I’m sharing my thoughts with you hoping that this will help you market yourself! But what I know is that we are on our way to living in the Jetson’s world, and we all are getting involved!
